MATHEMATICS YEAR 3

MEASURING AND COMPARING VOLUME OF LIQUID

Units of liquid

1. Units of volume of liquid are ml and l, ml is a short form for millilitre and l for litre.

2. 1 litre is equal to 1000 ml.
3. Some products have been labelled by it volume of liquid.

Measuring Volume of Liquid

1. To measure volume of liquid, we need to have a measuring cylinder.

2. The capacity of liquid in a container is how much liquid that a container holds.

3. To measure volume of liquid in a container, we have to look at the line or the bottom of are of liquid.

4. The volume of liquid could be in ml or l.

5. For example; look the container (beaker) below and measure the volume of liquid in it.

6. The container (a) holds 500 ml or 0.5 l.7. Container (b) has 350 ml 0r 0.35 l of liquid.
8. The last container has 1 l or 1000 ml or liquid.

Comparing Volume of liquid.

1. We have learnt how to measure the volume of liquid.

2. To compare volume of liquid. We should have two containers.

3. Lets see how to compare volume of liquid. Look and measure the volume of liquid in Jug A and Jug B.

5. Jug A has 1 litre and Jug B has 550 ml. So, Jug A has more water than Jug B, because 1 litres means 1000 millilitres.

6. If we compare the volume of liquid in two Jugs above, we can say that the Lower Jug has more water than the Upper Jug because the Lower Jug has 7 litres compared to 1 litres in the Upper Jug.
